Dependence - Good or Bad?
By Sunetra Basu
In my spiritual work I am often confronted with the issue of dependence of others on me... of the student on the Reiki teacher and of the client on the Reiki healing channel... should I allow or encourage such dependence or should I try to cut the cord off as early as possible? That the child needs to hold on to the parent’s finger until he had learnt to walk on his own, is a known fact, and once he gets the grip of it, he no longer needs the support. Personally, I feel until then it is my duty to be that support... gives them time to learn at their natural pace. But that’s just what’s apparent... there is a much deeper interpretation of what actually is going on here.
When this question was raised by someone only yesterday, I delved deep down in search of the fact of the matter. Within minutes the picture cleared and the awareness dawned within my conscious mind...
We are in a complex mesh of energies, the innumerable cords can never be ‘cut off’. There is no dependence anywhere among any two entities... it's actually always symbiosis!... it's pure give and take, an exchange of material or subtle energies.
When my student receives the gift of Reiki through me, I am the fortunate chosen one out of so many other Reiki Masters; I get to play the guru because he or she agrees to take it from me. When my client receives Reiki through me, I get deep healing and that lights up my day! In fact, energy exchange is always inherent in every bit of our survival. In that light, one does not even need to care for the explicit energy exchange as advised by the Founders...but that does help bring to the receiver’s conscience, “I just received goodness...a packet of divine bliss from you” and helps in appreciating with gratitude which in turn brings back a lot of goodies to him or her.
Otherwise, its all symbiosis! Right from the essential germs that feed on our stomach, to every action we do and every word we speak, each brings back energy in some form or the other. It is never a one way traffic.
Talking of us, Man is a social animal, so he lives and thrives in company of others. Each one of us depends on several others for sustenance, care, guidance, money, protection and above all, for love. There is a constant exchange of energies between individuals... friends, family, neighbors and even strangers... the doctor and the patient, the lawyer and the convict, the mob and the leader, the father and the child, the husband and the wife, the teacher and the student, the tree, the cat, the rodent and the earthworm are all providing in their own capacity... life is all about energy exchange. Not only that, we are exchanging essential vibrations with planets, with Mother Earth and with her natural resources, both living and non-living.
When I provide spiritual guidance to someone, I know I’m exchanging... that too, something that is not mine or anyone else’s, but universal... the positivity that is trickling down through me from the Source... the beam of divine light that shines through me and finds its way to others... and in return, I stand to get healed from the bliss of sharing and the blessings it brings back! So as many times as he looks at me foe guidance, I realize, “Wow! I was destined to be chosen!” ...just as he feels blessed to receive.
The entire universe is one huge system of energy exchange and we the individual streaks of energy that form, swirl and fade out into the whirlpool only to reappear in another color, shape and form. Dependence... isn’t that synonymous with symbiosis?
