On Depression and What Leads to Suicide

The quote that started it all -

“Suicide does not make a coward... it just shows the person has refused to be a sufferer.” - by Prasant Trivedi

I reacted angrily then came my comment :

“Bro you are encouraging a wrong thing.” - Anuj Chugh

“Dude it is reality..neither wrong nor right.” - Prasant Trivedi

I don’t agree because had the suicide victim carried on or make amends, the situations would have improved , no matter what he / she was going through at the time of committing the dire act - Anuj Chugh

“Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.” - Anuj Chugh

“This is where your practical business sense comes in..when a person reaches a point of suicide, he does not have mind enough to get over his sufferings..if they can remain sensible, it wont happen..some people live with insufficient resources, dude! even the biggest celebrities have committed suicide if you know.” - Prasant Trivedi

“I have felt suicidal many times. I still do. I never felt the need to commit suicide. I always fought with the situations. Things change. They always do. Change is the only constant.” - Anuj Chugh

But situation varies from person to person... maybe you never faced the extremity... maybe others did..

“You can’t take your example as an ideal situation to justify how bad it is!!” - Prasant Trivedi

“I agree with Prasant’s view... human thought process is highly individual dependent ... our thoughts, most of the time, are beyond our own rationality. So we may not be able to view the other person’s mental state. But I think suicides are mostly viewed just as an inability and weakness of the victim. Many speeches are so far given pertaining to the weakness involved in the victims. But thinking the other way, we, humans, are being made in such a way that we don’t even try to step on a thorn barefooted. We (generally) possess an aversion towards our own suffering. But a suicide involves the breaking of the basic instinct of the human to be averse towards suffering. So tendency (decision) to commit suicide must be a damn strong force. I think that more focus should be on the prevention of suicide having a more sensitive and realistic approach towards suicidal tendencies than having some callous talk about the victim after the death of him/her.” - Santosh Narva

“One such common cause of suicide can be linked to the victim not aware that no matter how difficult, that things can change. I plan to start working with depressed and suicidal people soon. Iif there’s truth in what I say, I will have empirical evidence.” - Anuj Chugh

“That is great bro ... Keep working with those depressed people. I too feel happy if u can change their mindset.” - reply by Santosh Narva

“ACT OF BRAVERY?” - a comment by Ganapathi Adiga

“Thank you Anuj Chugh and Santosh Narva for your brilliant comments and practical and sensitive thoughts on suicide and depression... and to be honest, suicide has a lot to do with depression. Anuj, if you can work towards helping suiciders and depressed people, that will be a wonderful kind gesture! I like you said that.” - Prasant Trivedi

“Of course, need to track down some good NGO already doing such work or start my own initiative!” - Anuj Chugh

“Fantastic... you wont believe, Anuj Chugh, but I also wanted to write a piece on struggle against depression... I would like to do something too in my free time... I have been through this phase for 2-3 years... I know what it feels like!!” - Prasant Trivedi
